Bearing down, easing up, improving the self, and nurturing the soul with Rob Thompson

Tuesdays at 9P EST | 8P CDT | 7P MDT | 6P PDT | 1A GMT | 3A CET | 9A AWST | 11A AEST

Description
Mindfulness training often involves a balance of applying effortful technique (bearing down) and falling into effortless progress (easing up). These skills may then be applied towards increasing our effectiveness and happiness in daily life (improving the self). Additionally, we may choose to fill our experience with combinations of intentional posture, inner sound, and inner sight (nurturing the soul), taking inspiration from the deep and rich collection of spiritual traditions from which modern mindfulness emerged.

Intended audience
All levels - beginners to advanced

Core intention of the course
Those looking to improve their skill in applying mindfulness technique, cultivating ease and intuition, applying their practice towards pragmatic goals, and exploring deeper connection with traditional wisdom through a respectful, curious, and non-sectarian lens.

Instructor
Rob Thompson discovered mindfulness after diagnosis of a serious health condition, and he found the mind-body connection cultivated through dedicated Zen practice an integral component of his healing journey. Rob leveraged his improved health and vitality towards a career as a water resource scientist, exploration of small-scale regenerative agriculture, and investigation of natural health modalities. He is excited to help others strengthen their own mindfulness skills and successfully apply them to increased happiness, performance, and connection.

Dharma Deep Dive - No Self / Anatta

Thursday, June 25 at 7:30P EST | 6:30P CDT | 5:30P MDT | 4:30P PDT | 11:30P GMT | 1:30A CET | 7:30A AWST | 9:30A AEST

We're excited to announce a new monthly series: Dharma Deep Dives.

These conversations will center a Dharma concept, begin with basic definitions, and dive into the layers of it's implications for practice on the cushion, in the context of everyday life, in culture, and on the evolution of consciousness. Because we'll be starting with the basics, this conversation is inviting for beginners with a curiosity about Buddhist phenomenology, and will also benefit from and welcome the input of well-versed practitioners who've integrated the concept into a lived experience.

For the first of these conversations we'll be discussing the Buddhist concept/view of "no self" (anattā).

At first glance, anattā seems counter-intuitive as it's suggestion that we have no "essence" or true "self" contradicts much of our individualist conditioning living within Western modernity. In our conversation we'll be seeking to illuminate how our conventional notions of personhood and self can be expanded into a wider and longer-term view of a human life that begins to look more like a "lifestream."

Please join us in this first deep dive together!
